Monday in New York against the MetsDunn made his debut in Reds and in the season and took the loss in a 5-1. After missing the first half of the season with a right shoulder strain, his departure in New York was the first in the majors since June 17, 2021, in Seattle contra Tampa Bay.

Dunn filled in the rotation spot vacated by right-hander Hunter Greene, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

Reds second baseman Jonathan India has endured a brutal year of injuries, almost taking a nightmarish turn after being hit by a pitch from Drew Smyly in the left shin in the first inning Thursday.

India limped to first base but stayed in the game, coming out only after striking out in the second inning and fielding in the third.

“I was like, I’m going back out there, this is a once in a lifetime thing,” India said on Saturday. “I came up to bat and I couldn’t focus. It hurt so much, I couldn’t land on my front foot. I struck out and thought, ‘This isn’t going right.’ I remember swinging at a pitch and almost falling.

“I was making a fool of myself. It was the right decision because it hurt me a lot. If I kept walking on it, they told me that if I played the rest of the match, it could have hurt me a lot.”

After the game, he was airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City and stayed the night because doctors were concerned about possible compartment syndrome, a serious condition that restricts blood flow. Once ruled out, he was released from the hospital on Friday.

India sat out Saturday’s match with a large bandage on their injured shin.

Cubs right-hander Adbert Alzolay (right elbow strain) continues to progress his throwing program in Arizona and now he faces the batsmen. Alzolay pitched two innings of batting practice Friday with no issues.

“I’d love to have him back here sometime this year,” said the president of baseball operations for CubsJed Hoyer. “If nothing else, to show he’s healthy heading into the offseason.”
