Ostapenko will start the ‘US Open’ tournament with a singles match against the Chinese Qinwen Zheng

Jeļena Ostapenko, the first racket of Latvian women’s tennis, will start the “US Open” tournament today with a singles match against the Chinese Qinwen Zhen.

It is planned that the match on the fourth court will start at 18:00 Latvian time. Portal “Delfi” will offer to follow the match in live text broadcast.

Ostapenko (WTA No. 16), ranked 16th in the competition, will meet Jena, ranked 39th in the world, in the first round match.

So far, the two athletes have not met.

In the most successful part of the season in the winter, Ostapenko won nine matches in a row and became the champion of the Dubai “WTA 500” series tournament. This year, the Latvian tennis player also reached the final in June at the Eastbourne tournament on grass in Great Britain, but Ostapenko played her last matches last week, losing to the American Madison Keys in the second round of the Cincinnati “WTA 1000” series tournament.

The 19-year-old Jen played successfully in Australia, where she celebrated nine wins in 11 matches in the warm-up tournament before the Australian Open and the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, including qualifying matches. This season, she also won the title of winner in two lower ranking competitions – Orlando “ITF 60” series tournament in the USA in January and “WTA 125” series competition in Valencia in June. The last time the Chinese woman played in the tournament was in the middle of August in the “WTA 1000” series competition in Toronto, reaching the quarterfinals, where she recognized the superiority of the Czech Karolina Pliskova.

The Latvian tennis player has won 25 out of 39 matches this season, while Džena has 30 successes in 44 matches.

Ostapenko has competed in the US Open Masters five times, reaching the 1/16 finals from 2017 to 2019, while Jena is a debutant at this tournament.

The winner of the match will have to meet the host Claire Liu (WTA 82) or the neutral athlete Anastasia Potapova (WTA 52) in the second round.

The Latvian tennis player will also participate in the “US Open” doubles tournament in a pair with the Ukrainian Ludmila Kičenok, in the first round of which she will face the Hungarian Panna Udvardi and the Slovenian Tamara Zidanšek.

The US Open tennis championship on the hard surface takes place from August 29 to September 11.
