Morata vindicates himself as Atlético’s scorer

Matchday 1

The connection between Joao Félix and the Madrid striker shone at the Coliseum, where Griezmann also wanted to be the protagonist

In the premiere of a season that must mean the revalidation of Diego Pablo Simeone at the head of an Atlético forced to fight again for the League, Álvaro Morata claimed himself as the undisputed scorer of a team that showed many of its virtues in its debut, although also shortcomings of the recent past. The striker from Madrid exhibited himself with a brace that sealed Atlético’s victory against Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, where the Joao Félix-Morata connection shone, although Antoine Griezmann also wanted to be the star of the match with a great goal less than a quarter of an hour later to jump onto the pitch.

In the three goals the assistant was Joao Félix, in his fourth year at Atlético, in which he is called to finally be the leader as long as Simeone grants him the opportunities he deserves. First of all, as it was sung since the preseason, the rojiblancos’ starting attacking pair was formed by the Portuguese striker and the Spanish international and Atlético were able to enjoy their first win with an effective game that relaunches the illusion of the colchoneros .

Atlético’s victory was resounding on the scoreboard thanks to its offensive efficiency, although the red-and-white team also risked a draw at the end of the first half and the start of the second due to their bad habit of taking a step back after taking the lead. Borja Mayoral sent a ball to the crossbar when the first half was consumed and Atlético had fallen back dangerously, and Enes Ünal pardoned five minutes after the break when the mattress midfielder made one of his usual mistakes. However, those warnings helped Atlético to react, and also to Simeone, who with his team so unstable made three changes at once that gave the block the consistency it needed.

Atlético went from more to less and had its ups and downs, but the one who was really in charge of shooting the team was Morata, who the first one he had plugged it into the net from the front with his left foot after a self-pass attempt by Joao Félix, who displayed talent once again. Just as Morata demonstrated his punch, he too with a great goal in the second half, taking advantage of a mistake by Mitrovic and then definitively settling the clash. Atlético, however, needed a reaction from the bench in those previous moments, because Getafe was pushing too hard and the favorite was only winning then by the minimum and Simeone was in charge of taking the reins, with three simultaneous changes that restored solidity.

With some defensive gaps, especially on the left side, where Saúl suffered too much against youth squad player Juan Iglesias, and also a certain weakness in a midfield that knows how to play but was outmatched without the ball, the real difference was in the attacks. With Joao Félix’s vision of the game and Morata’s aim, Atlético was devastating, while Borja Mayoral and Enes Ünal on the opposite side lacked theirs. There was also a great difference in the quality of the squad and football of both teams, although Getafe managed to equalize the duel and at times overcome the colchoneros based on character and pressure in the midfield, causing dangerous losses in the rojiblancos.

However, also when it was necessary to take a step forward, Atlético did so, containing the rival with the ball in their possession, although Simeone is more in favor of getting the most out of his team by holding back and running with spaces. This is how Atlético del Getafe took advantage to increase the score, when the azulón team was more ambitious to try to reduce differences and between Morata and Griezmann they made a hole in their defense.

Joao Félix was always present there, who wants to show his coach that he must be indisputable up front, just like Morata, who although he seemed destined to leave Atlético this summer and continue at Juventus, continues to progress with the red and white, after a great pre-season from Madrid. With this level of Joao Félix and Morata, Atlético climbs one more step to, at least, compete for all the titles. The start could not be more hopeful for the mattresses.
