SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw left the game against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon after he appeared to be injured.
The 34-year-old left-handed gunner suddenly looked uncomfortable as he warmed up before entering the second half of the fifth inning.
The Dodgers still won 5-3. The pitchers who took over from Kershaw gave the Giants just two meager hits. Chris Martin (2-0) was the winning pitcher. Craig Kimbrel collected a 20th save.
Mookie Betts drove in three runs on his 25th home run of the season. Trea Turner hit her 18th of the campaign, a solo shot in the seventh inning.
For the Giants JD Davis hit a two-run slap.
The Giants pitchers totaled no less than 14 strikeouts in the loss, which went to starter Jakob Junis (4-3). He gave up three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
The Giants have the worst major league record since the All-Star Game break with a 3-12 record.
Kershaw, a three-time National League Cy Young Trophy winner, grimaced and pointed toward the Dodgers dugout. He then left the field walking slowly, with a healer.
Kershaw threw 66 pitches over four innings, allowing one earned run and three hits. He recorded four strikeouts. He left the mound with a 4-2 lead. Right-hander Phil Bickford took over.
Kershaw spent time on the injured list earlier this season with an inflamed pelvic joint. Going into Thursday’s game, he was 7-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 14 starts.
The Dodgers, leaders of the National League West, are looking for their fifth straight win.
