The Dutch Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) won the WorldTour race in Vargarda, Sweden on Sunday. Though the joy was short-lived. Vos was disqualified by the UCI because she drove for a few seconds with her wrists on her handlebars and that is not allowed. The victory therefore goes to number two Cordon-Ragot. Our compatriot Valerie Demey is still fourth on the podium.

The day after the team time trial in Vargarda, won by Trek-Segafredo, a one-day race was set up in Sweden. In a race of 125 kilometers, mainly finished on an undulating and technical circuit, it was mainly looking forward to the Dutch participants: Lorena Wiebes, Marianne Vos, Demi Vollering, Ellen van Dijk and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak were the main candidates to win .

Despite many attacking attempts, the race didn’t open until the final local lap, thanks to an uphill attack by French champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot. She was joined by Vos, Demey and the British Pfeiffer Georgi, a watchdog of Wiebes. Despite SD Worx’s pursuit, which had missed the good shot, the four remained ahead. Demey cracked in the final kilometer due to an attack by Georgi, Vos then won the sprint ahead of Cordon-Ragot and Georgi. Vos already triumphed for a fourth time in Vargarda, but the victory was taken away from her by the UCI afterwards. The Dutchman drove around for a few seconds in the so-called puppy paws-houding, where the hands are loose on the handlebars. That attitude has recently become illegal and resulted in Vos being disqualified.

The second Belgian participant, Shari Bossuyt, finished eleventh in the group sprint for the places of honour. Due to the disqualification, Bossuyt does enter the top ten. Both Demey and Bossuyt are also on the starting list of the next WorldTour race in the far North: the six-day Tour of Scandinavia, which starts on Tuesday.
