Manchester City Turns Aim For Anderlecht Left-Back Sergio Gomez

Manchester City are reportedly in talks to sign Anderlecht’s 21-year-old left-back Sergio Gomez.

Any transfer for the former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund defender could be new ammunition for full-back in the main team.

Pep Guardiola still wants a replacement for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who joined Arsenal earlier this summer, but City have ruled out any move for Marc Cucurella from Brighton as he moves closer to Chelsea.

Who is Gomez?

The Spain Under-21 international has been a regular for Anderlecht since he moved to the Belgian club from Dortmund in June 2021.

Gomez was voted the club’s Player of the Year last season after making 49 appearances under former City boss and captain Vincent Kompany.

Gomez began his career as an attacking player during his time at Barcelona’s La Masia Academy and was once dubbed the “new Iniesta”.

Mentioned in the top 50 teenagers NXGN GOAL on the planet in 2019, Dortmund had paid €3 million to bring him to the Bundesliga, but he played just ten minutes in three first-team appearances before moving to Belgium.

How’s the hunt for City’s left-back?

His compatriot Cucurella is City’s main target, but they have refused to comply with Brighton’s £50 million ($61 million) request for another former Barca defender.

City continue to be linked with a number of players, but Guardiola currently has right-back Joao Cancelo, academy product, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and centre-back Nathan Ake as options.
