COLORADO SPRINGS, Col.- USA Basketball picked its 12-man roster for the opening window of the second round of World Cup qualifying as the Americans try to close in on a spot on the field for next year’s event.
Jim Boylen will return as coach, again assisted by Ty Ellis and Othella Harrington.
The roster will include six players: Michael Frazier yo, Langston Galloway, david stockton, By Quan Jeffries, Juan Jenkins Y eric mika – who was with the Americans in the previous qualifying window in July.
The other six players for the games on August 25 in Las Vegas against Uruguay and in Colombia on August 29 are Tyler Cavanaugh, malik ellisonDewan Hernandez, Mac McClung, Roberto WoodardII Y McKinley-Wright IV.
The Americans finished 5-1 in the first round of FIBA Americas Region qualifying, easily becoming one of 12 teams to advance to the second round.
Of these progressing nations, seven will participate in next year’s World Cup, which will take place in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. The World Cup is the main qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
There are three two-game windows in the second qualifying round: for the Americas region, it’s August 25-29, November 11-14, and finally February 23-26. If the US beats Uruguay and Colombia, it could likely earn a World Cup spot in the November window.
Canada (6-0) is the only team from the Americas region to remain undefeated in the first qualifying round. Also in Canada’s group for the second round: Venezuela (5-1), Argentina (5-1), Dominican Republic (4-2), Panama (2-4) and Bahamas (2-4).
The United States is in the second round group with Brazil (5-1), Uruguay (4-2), Mexico (4-2), Puerto Rico (3-3) and Colombia (2-4).
The top three teams from each group will advance to the World Cup from the Americas region, along with the best team in fourth place overall.
