Laura Mair from Val Gardena is one of the greatest tennis talents in South Tyrol. Last weekend she celebrated the biggest success of her young career.

Laura Mair has had turbulent days. Only 10 days ago she reached the quarterfinals of an ITF tournament endowed with 15,000 dollars for the first time in her career in Kottingbrunn, Austria. A few days later, this record was history again. Because last week, the 19-year-old from Selva reached the final of an ITF tournament for the first time. Mair, who is 1110th in the WTA ranking, lost this in two sets 2: 6, 1: 6 to Federica Bilardo, who is 461 positions higher. But the direction is definitely right for the talented tennis player.

“The tournament in Kottingbrunn gave me a lot of security and self-confidence,” Mair explained SportNews. “Nevertheless, I never expected to reach the final in Padua. There were eight matches from qualifying to the final, so I didn’t think I could get that far.”

A difficult road to the final

Mair, who is also in the modeling business, almost exclusively knocked out players who were ranked higher than her on her way to the final. The encounters were accordingly competitive and all went over three sets, which gnawed at the substance. “After the semi-final I felt that I was tired. I knew it was going to be a tough final, so I made it my mission to just do my best. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough in the end.”

Now Laura Mair wants to take this positive momentum with her and attack at the next tournaments. Already on Tuesday we go to Bad Waltersdorf, Austria. “I’ll probably play two ITF tournaments, then it’s on to Trieste for a $25,000 tournament.”
