JSI 2022 review – 7 medals, 3×3 basketball the only team sport awarded with Gold!

The 5th edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games ended Thursday in Konya (Turkey), which hosted the games. Senegal is making good progress.

It’s a good harvest for Senegal, which took part in 14 disciplines during this competition. The delegation of the country of Teranga returns home with 7 medals including one in gold, another in silver and 5 in bronze. For its 4th participation in this competition which brings together the member countries of the Federation of Islamic Countries, Senegal has made good progress. In 2017, during its last participation, the delegation returned with 3 medals (gold, silver and bronze).

It should also be noted that there is a strong mobilization in 2022, there are nearly a hundred athletes. Moreover, the Minister of Sports Matar Ba had underlined this performance to dub the delegation during the ceremony of handing over the national flag. “In 2017, as you know, Senegal had achieved remarkable performances with three (03) individual medals and was ranked 21st out of 54 participating nations. For the 2022 edition, we are expecting better results and counting on each and every one of you to achieve this, thanks in particular to your undeniable talents but above all to your irrepressible desire to fill all your compatriots with joy,” he declared. This time, Senegal is in 22nd place out of 55 places. But with 7 medals!

Basketball 3X3 saves team sports for its first participation!

In Football, Handball, Volleyball, Judo, Karate, Senegal failed to shine. The local Lions were eliminated in the group stage (one defeat, one draw and one victory). The Women’s National Handball Team also stopped in the first round after two defeats and one victory.

And for its first participation in this competition, 3X3 basketball managed to make its mark by winning gold with the men’s national team. She thus won Senegal’s only gold medal. The women’s selection is eliminated in the quarter-finals by Mali.
