Cincinnati Reds player Joey Votto announced on Wednesday that his season was over, as he will go under the knife on Friday.

According to the daily “Cincinnati Enquirer”, the Ontarian suffered a rotator cuff tear in one shoulder. He is now expected to be back in time for next season’s spring training camp. During a press briefing, Votto revealed that his injury may have been as far back as the 2015 season, but he was able to play despite the pain.
“It’s only been in the last three months that it’s become so painful that it’s hard to lift [mon bras] and what it does when I sleep, he said. I’m not sure if it affected my performance…I can’t say that. I don’t want to look for excuses.”
The 38-year-old, who plays at first base, is having a tough season, like most of his teammates in Cincinnati. The six-time All-Star Gamer has a .205 batting average and has produced 41 runs in 91 games. He also hit 11 homers.
Votto still had time to put his name in the history books by setting the mark for the most games played by a Canadian in major league baseball history on Sunday. The 16-year veteran has played in 1,991 career meetings, all with the Reds.
