We are saddened to announce the passing of 2009 Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer at the age of 68 on Wednesday.
Peace be with him. Corky Palmer, according to USM baseball coach Scott Berry, “was no better representative than Southern Miss Baseball and the University of Southern Miss as a whole.”

In August 2020, Palmer suffered a severe stroke while recovering from neck surgery. Shortly thereafter he was sent to Collins’ Landmark Nursing Home, where he remained.
He leaves behind his wife Debbie Palmer, as well as his brothers Ted and Mike Palmer.

Who is Corky Palmer?
Carlton Devan “Corky” Palmer (March 14, 1954 – August 10, 2022) was the college baseball head coach at Meridian Community College and the manager of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team for 12 seasons before retiring at the end of the 2009 season. .
In his final season, he led the Golden Eagles to the school’s first appearance in the College World Series.
Corky, born March 15, 1954, attended Hattiesburg High School and was a catcher who earned three college baseball letters.
Palmer took on the starting catcher role for the Golden Eagles as a freshman during his stint as a collegiate player for Southern Miss.
Corky Palmer’s career
Palmer, who modeled himself on Yankees legend Yogi Berra, had a career batting average of .277 and graduated from Southern Miss in 1977.
At Lee High School in Columbus, Mississippi, he took his first coaching position after rising through the ranks as an athletic trainer.
Palmer achieved rapid success, winning three Little 10 Conference championships in his first three seasons in 1979.
After attending Columbia High School, Corky won the South State Championship in 1983.
He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 1985 before accepting the position of head coach at Meridian Community College in 1987.
Palmer played a key role in three Juco World Series there, winning with a final score of 409-160.
Prior to the 1998 season, the position of head coach at Southern Miss became available and Corky immediately began reviving the organization.
In 1999, the Golden Eagles made their third NCAA tournament appearance in the program’s history.
The coach then led the Southern Miss to 7 consecutive NCAA regions from 2003 to 2009, winning the 2003 US Conference regular season and tournament championships.
“It was a youth evolution from what he did on both the coaching staff and the character side,” said Berry, an assistant coach at Palmer who worked under Palmer.
