Honda will continue to technically support Red Bull and Verstappen until 2025 | NOW

Honda will continue to provide technical support to Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing until 2025. The Japanese manufacturer and the Formula 1 team extended the successful cooperation for two years on Tuesday. Earlier it was announced that the Japanese will supply the engines until the end of that year.

Partly because of the current successes of Verstappen – he captured the world title last year and is also well on his way to the championship this season – the contract has been broken. Sister team AlphaTauri will also continue to use Honda engines. Both teams’ engines are registered as Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT), but they are made in the factory of the Japanese brand.

Honda has been supplying engines to Red Bull since 2019. “The partnership has been incredibly successful so far. We are delighted to be able to continue it until the end of the current engine era,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner about the contract extension.

In addition to the fact that the Japanese continue to build the power source, Honda personnel also remain active on the circuits and maintenance is also carried out by them. Red Bull will therefore not have to worry about the engines until 2025.

Own engine in 2026, probably in collaboration with Porsche

The Austrian team is targeting 2026, when new power unit rules apply. The team is expected to announce a future collaboration with Porsche soon. In recent months, many personnel have been taken away from other manufacturers, especially Mercedes, for the development of this new power source.

As of September 1, 2022, the development of Formula 1 engines will be frozen until the end of 2025. From then on, only adjustments may be made to solve reliability problems. Provided those problems are limited, Honda no longer has to spend millions on making the engines better.

Thirteen races have now been held in the Formula 1 season. As World Cup leader, Verstappen has eighty points ahead of number two Charles Leclerc. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez is number three in the standings.
