STADIUM Gelora Bung Tomo was officially appointed by FIFA to host the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup Qualification. The Surabaya City Government has prepared optimally so that the stadium is ready to be used for the U-19 Indonesian National Team to compete in the event.
An official letter from FIFA and the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has been issued. This was confirmed by the Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, on Friday, August 27, 2022.
“There has been an official letter from FIFA and PSSI, GBT is used for the Asian Cup (U-20) match (Qualification) on September 14, 2022,” said Eri, quoted from Between.
It is known that the U-20 2023 Asian Cup Qualification match will be held on September 14-18 2022 for Group F which is filled by the U-20 Indonesian National Team, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Timor Leste.
Mayor Eri explained several preparations that had been implemented at GBT, starting from road access, journalists’ coverage areas, spectator stands and so on. Eri said the standard of preparation used was adjusted to the procedures for the World Cup match.
“Certainly the preparations for the Asian Cup (U-20) later will apply all the requirements at the World Cup. After the Asian Cup (U-20) (Qualification) is complete, the GBT Stadium has international capacity and standards, “said Eri.
Eri added that when GBT Stadium was used for international matches, it became the pride of Arek-arek Suroboyo. Not only that, he continued, of course it will also be an encouragement for Persebaya players so that they can win in League 1.
“Ahead of the AFC match, God willing, the road to GBT will not only have one point. But we will also make other points to make it easier to access,” he said.
