FIFA suspends Indian FA over ‘serious violation’

The Bureau of the FIFA Council on Monday suspended the Indian Football Federation (AIFF) due to “serious violation”which calls into question the organization of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for India in the fall.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the Indian Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect for undue influence by third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes”said the international body in the communiqué.

The AIFF was due to appoint a new president in December 2020 but problems with constitutional amendments delayed the appointment process, leading FIFA to sanction the Indian institution.

In May, India’s highest court ruled to dissolve the AIFF and appoint a three-person jury to hold elections by September 15. The Women’s Under-17 World Cup, originally scheduled for November 2020, and several times postponed due to Covid-19, is to take place in India from October 11 to 30.
