As of: 08/20/2022 9:57 p.m

Union Berlin has again won against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. This was based on perfect counterattacks.

RB Leipzig is slowly becoming Union Berlin’s favorite opponent. The “Iron” beat the Saxons 2-1 (2-0) on Saturday evening (08/20/2022) in the stadium at the Alte Försterei in front of around 22,000 spectators. Jordan Siebatcheu (32nd minute) gave Union the lead, Sheraldo Becker (38th) increased. Willi Orban (84th) only managed to score the goal. It was the fourth Bundesliga win in a row against RB for Urs Fischer’s team.

With two wins and a draw, the Berliners have made a successful start to the season. Leipzig is lagging behind its own claims after the current defeat and two before that handed over far behind.

Some excitement about foul on Werner

The “Iron” once again built on their strength at home and theirs FansAfter all, only Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have won there in the past 23 months. After a somewhat tough initial quarter of an hour with a little excitement because of a supposedly penalty-worthy foul on Timo Werner, the Berliners had their first big chance.

Simakan clears in front of the line, Werner hits the post

Julian Ryerson (15.) aimed flat at the left corner from the backcourt. RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, due to an injury from Péter Gulácsi made his league debut wouldn’t have had a chance but Mohamed Simakan cleared just before the line. Four minutes later, the cup winner had his first huge chance. Werner lobbed the ball over Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, but only hit the left inside post.

Blitz counter shock RB

RB showed the more mature game system, had significantly more ball possession in the first round (76 percent), but the lead was achieved by Union. Siebatcheu completed the first lightning counterattack with a low shot to make it 1-0, and the stadium shook. Even more ecstasy spread six minutes later, again after a quick counterattack, which Becker completed in the far corner.

The Berliners refined the counterattack to lead 13 seconds after winning the ball, and even after twelve seconds to make it 2-0. The Leipzig defense seemed unsorted every time.

RB with anger in the stomach from the cabin

The Leipzig team started the second half with anger in their stomachs. The ambitious Saxons didn’t want to be processed so easily. But Union continued to hold back with a compact and aggressive team performance and tried to score a third goal.

Substitute Marcel Halstenberg (68th) had a great chance to score in Leipzig. Rönnow let his shot from a cross slip under his right hand, but Ryerson cleared the line at the last moment.

Orban did better seven minutes before the end of regular time when he scored the goal with a header. In the end, the Berliners trembled victory over the finish line despite the Leipzig assault. RB came out on top in all stats – just not on the scoreboard.

Union now at Schalke, Leipzig against Wolfsburg

Union has to go to Schalke 04 next Saturday (27.08.2022) at 3.30 p.m. At the same time, Leipzig is playing VfL Wolfsburg at home.
