On day four of the European Championships in Athletics, Thomas Carmoy achieved a nice 5th place in the final of the high jump. Earlier in the day Eliott Crestan impressed in the 800m series, a strong Tibo De Smet also qualified. Julien Watrin raced to the final in the 400m hurdles in the 3rd fastest time. Ben Broeders was killed in the pole vault.
The Belgians: Carmoy, Crestan and Watrin are stars
In the shadow of the heptathlon players, a lot of Belgians came into action on Thursday at the European Athletics Championships. In the 800m series, Eliott Crestan and Tibo De Smet delivered great performances. Crestan dominated and won his series, De Smet was 4th in his series, but also ran the 4th time of all participants and was fished out.
It inspired Julien Watrin in the 400m hurdles to perform a number as well. He reached the final with the third fastest time. Ben Broeders did less well. The pole vaulter is having a top season, but surprisingly choked in 5m50m. No final for him.
Delphine Nkansa and Imke Vervaet fought their way through the series in the 200m, but a place in the final was too much for them. Ismaël Debjani (1500m) and Lisa Rooms (5000m) were in a final, but both played a supporting role.
Finals: Ingebrigtsen dominates, surprise in the long jump
The rain had disrupted the evening programme, which meant that six finals had to be played at a fast pace. In the men’s high jump, Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi flew to gold, in the hammer throw, an Olympic champion also won in the men’s Wojciech Nowicki.
The women’s long jump caused a surprise: the Serbian Ivana Vuleta won gold, ahead of the famous German favorite Malaika Mihambo. Fortunately, the German public was able to warm up to the performance of Konstanze Klosterhalfen, who ran to the title in the 5000m.
As expected, wonderboy Jakob Ingebrigtsen was no match for the 1500m. The Norwegian led from start to finish, squeezing the competition one by one. After his gold in the 5000m, the 22-year-old phenomenon adds another slice to his already bulging trophy cabinet.
