Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers in talks about Collin Sexton

The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly been in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers over a potential sign-and-trade deal for Collin Sexton.

However, Chris Fedor reported in the Wine and Gold Podcastthat an obligation is probably rather improbable. The Mavs don’t seem to have anything to offer in return. In addition, Dallas would first have to get rid of salary in order to make a sign-and-trade for the guard possible at all.

After the departure of Jalen Brunson to the New York Knicks, the Texans could use an additional ball handler to support Luka Doncic. Sexton is a scorer and has no trouble creating his own shot. However, he only played 11 games last season due to a meniscus injury.

The 23-year-old is still without a team and is a restricted free agent. That means the Cavs can call any offer for the guard. Fedor reported in late July that contract negotiations between the Cavs and Sexton are unsuccessful. An offer from Cleveland over three years and $40 million is probably not enough for Sexton. The 8th pick of 2018 is therefore hoping for at least 80 million dollars.

Collin Sexton: Utah Jazz probably interested too

With All-Star Darius Garland, Caris LeVert, and this year’s #14 draft pick Ochai Agbaji, the Cavs feel they’re well positioned for the season and don’t want to keep Sexton at all costs. However, have noisy Sportrac only the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs had enough air at Cap Space to sign him.

According to Fedor, the Utah Jazz are also interested. But even the Salt Lake franchise – like the Mavs – probably doesn’t have enough value to offer. Here, too, an obligation seems rather unlikely.

If no deal is struck, Sexton could play for the Cavs next season and earn $7.2 million if he accepts the qualifying offer. With a good season, he could get himself talked about by other teams. After that, Sexton becomes an unrestricted free agent and can choose his team freely.
