Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula talk about their degree in Toronto

Cori Gauff y Jessica Pegula They are living a dream, to be number one in the WTA Ranking in doubles. The Americans, in addition to winning the title in Toronto, had the opportunity to win the highest position in the WTA ranking. After finishing the meeting, they talked about what both achievements mean to them.

Gauff, on being number 1

I feel great, at the beginning we had three losses at the beginning of our partnership. But I knew that we had good results in singles, this could also translate to doubles.

How did you find out that they could be number 1

For me to be number 1 is incredible. I have no words, I didn’t even know that this could happen this week and what I should do. But Jessica told me yesterday (laughs), she didn’t make me nervous anymore. If she was solo, I would have been much more nervous.

Pegula, for this same situation

Incredible, spectacular. I am proud to have helped her achieve it today. It’s amazing to be 18 and number 1. She’s been amazing, super exciting. It is being a very nice little trip that we are experiencing together, even though I am 10 years older (she laughs).

Gauff, influence of his doubles game in singles

Individual tennis has helped me a lot. Above all, in the rest. I feel that there is more pressure in the rest of the doubles, you know that there is a person in the network. I think my remains in singles have been improving little by little thanks to the doubles.

On whether it has ever been a goal for her to be No. 1 in doubles

Not when I was a girl. I’m going to be honest with you, I didn’t even know there were two separate rankings for singles and doubles. But when I got to the circuit and I found out that there were two rankings, yes.

The possibility of winning the US Open after two Americans did it 11 years ago

It would be great, I mean, I didn’t even know that. For me, winning a Grand Slam is always a goal, but who were the last ones? Venus and Serena? But yeah, it would be great, we were close at the US Open and I was close last year (laughs). We’ll probably make it, but I don’t want to put pressure on us.

So much Cori Guaff as Jessica Pegula they are living a dream. Gauff, at 18, is one of the youngest tennis players to achieve it of all time and it can serve as a training for what may happen in the coming years in singles.
