Canoe World Cup – two gold at the end – sport

The German canoeists experienced a small gold rush on the final day of the World Championships in Halifax, Canada. The three-time Olympic champion Sebastian Brendel (Potsdam) and his Berlin partner Tim Hecker won in the canoe pair over the former Olympic distance of 1000 meters. The day before they had missed the hoped-for medal over half the distance in the race. Brendel, 34, won his 13th World Championship gold on Lake Banook. Hecker, on the other hand, who is ten years his junior, celebrated his first international title in the adult division. In addition, Martin Hiller and Tamas Grosmann from Potsdam managed a surprise coup in the men’s kayak double over 1000 meters; they won the World Cup ahead of Italy.

The German men’s kayak four, on the other hand, missed gold over the 500 meters. Tokyo Olympic champions Max Rendschmidt, Tim Liebscher and Max Lemke had to settle for silver together with Jacob Schopf, Ronny Rauhe’s successor. The Spanish four won, which the German boat had left behind in Tokyo last year. The German Canoe Association in Halifax won a total of ten medals.
