Saina Nehwal against Cheung Ngan

Saina Nehwal is returning to the World Championships from 2019. She missed the last edition due to a groin and knee injury, while the 2021 edition was canceled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. She is the most experienced Indian currently in the tournament and is hoping for a change of fortune as she has so far struggled with her form this season. She failed to get past the second round in any tournament in the first half of the year. Her best performance so far is a quarter-final appearance at the Singapore Open recently.

Saina, currently ranked 33rd in the world, enters the tournament as an unseeded player and faces 50th-ranked Cheung Ngan Yi in the first round. Ngan Yi, 29, missed most of the season due to injury and is making a comeback this year. This will be his first tournament of the season. Both players have met five times in the past. Saina Nehwal leads the head-to-head record 3-1. Nehwal will enter the contest as the favorite.

Treesa Jolly / Gayatri Gopichand

Indian women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are making their first appearance at the World Championships. The Indian couple had a great run this year. They started off by finishing as runners-up at the Syed Modi International, then went on to win the Odisha Open title, which was their first tour-level title. They then made history by becoming the first Indian women’s duo to reach the semi-finals of the All England Championship. They recently won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. They will face Low Yeen Yuan and Valeree Siow from Malaysia in the first round.

The Malaysian couple is ranked 33rd in the world rankings and won the Syed Modi International earlier in the year. That was his only title so far this year. They made quarterfinal appearances at the Swiss Open, Malaysian Masters, and Malaysian Open. The first round contest is expected to be a close encounter. Both pairs met earlier this year at the Syed Modi International and the Malaysian duo won the contest in back-to-back games in the final.
