Bundesliga: Lustenau celebrates derby victory

Coach Markus Mader’s squad, who were 1-0 down, can look forward to their second win in a row, with ten points after five rounds, the Lustenau team got off to an excellent start to the season. Thanks to Sturm Graz’s 1-0 home defeat against LASK, Lustenau also improved to third place, three points behind Linz and two behind Salzburg.

Altacher had taken the lead through Alexis Tibidi (25th), Lustenau captain and ex-Altacher Matthias Maak (30th) managed to equalize a little later. The only Vorarlberg duels in the Bundesliga up to that point had been between Lustenauer and Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz in the 1999/2000 season.

Lustenau wins the Vorarlberg derby

The number one in Vorarlberg football is currently Austria Lustenau. The Lustenau team won the derby near Altach 2-1 with a late goal.

Tension before Ländle-Derby

The Klose-Elf was looking for compensation after the 0: 4 at runner-up Sturm, even the 2014 world champion felt nervous before the game, as he admitted. The game in the sold-out Schnabelholz in front of 8,500 spectators started five minutes late after the Lustenau fans had produced some smoke during their choreography.

In the early stages, the guests pressed very hard, which meant that the Klose team didn’t come into play at all. An open game only developed after a quarter of an hour. It took 19 minutes for the first excitement: Tibidi was supposedly brought down at the edge of the penalty area by Fabian Gmeiner, but referee Sebastian Gishamer saw the Stuttgart loanee take a swallow.

Lead and equalizer in five minutes

Shortly thereafter, however, Tibidi was allowed to celebrate. After a Thurnwald cross, the 18-year-old prevailed in a header duel against Gmeiner and gave Lustenau goalie Domenik Schierl no chance. After half an hour, the Lustenauers managed to respond quickly, similar to the Altach goal, Maak headed in from a short distance after a Teixeira cross.

The 30-year-old central defender scored his last Bundesliga goal almost three years ago in the Altach jersey. Shortly thereafter, Stefan Haudum was about to take the lead again, but his shot after Tibidi’s cross went just wide.

Nice game in heavy rain

After the break, the rain got heavier and the fans saw a lively game with many half-chances for both sides. Austria striker Teixeira failed to get the ball on target twice (54’/57′), on the other side a free kick from Manuel Thurnwald (57′) did not embarrass Schierl. After an hour, Maak made a save just short of the line on a Forson chance.

The Lustenau kickers and their fans didn’t let the pouring rain stop them from celebrating

In the final quarter of an hour, both teams played for victory, the Lustenau found the better chances on slippery ground. Altach goalie Tino Casali had to stand out twice against Torben Rhein (77’/85′), and the goalie made an impressive save against Teixeira in stoppage time. Shortly thereafter, Joker Anthony Schmid served the completely free-standing Frenchman in the penalty area, the 21-year-old remained ice cold in front of Casali. Just before the final whistle, Pius Grabher from Lustenau made a save on the line.

Comments on the game:

Miroslav Klose (Altach coach): “It was difficult today, many things didn’t go smoothly. But most of it was in my head. We haven’t been there at all. That annoys me because I thought we were further along. I have to talk, first with the team, then maybe in individual talks. It’s important that you’re honest with me. After the thing we have something to make up for and we have to develop what the opponent had today. I know what it’s like, I’ve crawled out of enough holes.”

Markus Mader (Lustenau coach): “We really wanted it. I would have signed a point in the 80th minute, but the team wanted more. That makes us all brutally proud of how we performed. For me there are three important points, we kept our flow. Even one point would have been brutally strong, so it’s all the nicer that there are three again.”
