FootballYesterday, the camp of former star football player Ryan Giggs (48) reacted for the first time to the allegations of domestic violence and controlling behaviour. His ex-partner Kate Greville (38) said during the trial on Monday that she got into an argument with the Welshman in a hotel room in Dubai and was thrown naked into the hallway. She sustained injuries. That particular incident has now been dismissed by Giggs’ lawyer as lies. According to him, too rough sex would have been the cause of Greville’s bruises.
Giggs was arrested in November 2020 after a complaint from his then-partner Kate Greville. He accused him of “years of physical violence and controlling behaviour”. Her sister also made similar accusations.
Giggs already appeared in court in April last year. The former left winger of Manchester United pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. He nevertheless decided to resign as Wales national team coach.
Bruising
The new trial started on Monday. Greville gave her version of the facts, saying that Giggs – she had known him since 2013 and the couple confirmed their relationship in 2016 – often misbehaved. Especially at the end of their relationship. “At first I saw him as a knight who rescued me from another difficult relationship. But when we moved in together, he completely changed. I always had to do what he said or there would be consequences. I was a slave to his needs and demands. And he was regularly aggressive.” As an example, Greville brought up some shocking stories. For example, the ex-winger would once have thrown her naked from a hotel room in Dubai, along with all her belongings. That after the pair had a discussion about who Giggs was texting with. It must have been brutal, as the bruises on Greville’s arms prove.
On Wednesday, the opposing team spoke for the first time. Via Chris Daw, Giggs’ attorney. He knows the tricks of the trade, because he has often assisted well-known athletes, such as John Terry when he was accused of racism by Anton Ferdinand in 2012. Daw specifically mentioned the “hotel incident” and spoke of a plethora of lies. Shortly after that evening in Dubai, Greville is said to have sent a message to a friend in which she described her bruises as “a sex bruise”. Not Giggs’ anger, but “too rough sex” would be the cause of her injuries, Daw said. Because, according to the same Daw – as must be apparent from text messages – Greville had asked Giggs to be a little more “assertive” in their sex life.

Greville also accused Giggs of headbutting her when she wanted to leave him, on November 1, 2020. “After meeting friends at a hotel, we got into an argument. In our room Ryan was packing my things – he was drunk and yelling very loudly,” Greville explained on Monday. “I took an Uber cab home and in the meantime called my sister, who was babysitting our dog, to pack my things. But Ryan also arrived quickly and blocked our car.” The situation escalated and, according to Greville, Giggs suddenly headbutted her. “He looked straight into my eyes, grabbed my shoulders and headbutted me out of nowhere,” she said. “I didn’t know what was happening to me and fell backwards. My lip immediately swelled up and I tasted blood. Ryan asked me to let the incident pass, but he had gone too far.”
Giggs is also said to have thrown a backpack containing a laptop at Greville’s head after she accused him of flirting with another woman.
The trial will take about ten days in total, with Giggs later getting the chance to give his version of the facts.
Greville’s best accusations against Giggs:
• In 2017 would have kicked the ex-footballer Greville naked from their hotel room. The Welshman also reportedly threw her belongings into the hallway.
• In 2019 Giggs allegedly threw a backpack containing a laptop at Greville’s head after she accused him of flirting with another woman.
• Greville also showed photos of bruises she was left with from an incident that happened in 2020 played in Dubai.
• The woman also said she found evidence that Giggs had cheated on her with eight other women during their relationship.
• Greville also talks about mental torments. For example, Giggs would have told her that she did not deserve children when she expressed her wish to become a mother. And he would have called her “Stacy” regularly. That is the name of his ex-wife and according to Greville it was “the ultimate insult”.
• After Greville blocked him on social media, Giggs allegedly sent her a message titled ‘Blackmail’ (blackmail). According to Greville, a video was also included. She said she did not open it, but she feared that it was a sex tape that they had made.
