Bomb alert, 1,000 people evacuated from Jamsil sports complex

SEOUL, Aug. 07 (Yonhap) — Nearly 1,000 people were evacuated Sunday after a man in his 20s threatened to detonate bombs at the Jamsil Sports Complex in southeast Seoul. .

The man, who claimed to be an ‘Islamic State (IS) warrior’, posted an announcement on an online community forum on Sunday morning saying he will detonate bombs three times at the sports complex, according to the Songpa fire station in Seoul.

Police notified firefighters of the threat at 10:19 a.m. to jointly respond to it, officials said.

They sent 14 vehicles and 58 officers to evacuate some 1,000 people from the compound in preparation for Seoul Festa, an annual tourist festival. Players from the LG Twins baseball club who were training were also evacuated.

Authorities searched the complex but found no explosives.

After finding the post’s IP address, police confirmed that a man in his twenties living in Goyang City, north of Seoul, had written it down but did not place it on file. police custody because he is a mentally ill person.
