With a little help from the crowd, Nick Kyrgios started the Citi Open campaign with a win on Tuesday, beating Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets.
At the ATP 500 event in Washington, the 27-year-old chatted briefly to a spectator in the front row at match point and asked how he should serve.
The contribution did not quite succeed – the first serve landed in the net. Kyrgios apologized to his advisor with a short “Sorry”. There were some laughs for the show in the stands.

The Wimbledon finalist considers the action a nice experience: “In 2019 I did exactly that with match point, just asked someone in the crowd. I think it’s a cool experience for someone who paid money to see you play and possibly go home with that memory,” Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.
When he won that same tournament in 2019, Kyrgios frequently asked fans where to serve at match point, and this entertaining strategy proved successful.
“Whether it’s a young kid or an older lady like today, I think that’s something that’s pretty cool. I wish I had had that experience watching tennis matches,” said the Australian.
