Leroy Sané continues to have a difficult time at Bayern Munich. Against Eintracht Frankfurt he showed his class – and his mistakes.

Frankfurt – what a gala! FC Bayern Munich shot Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 out of the stadium at the start of the Bundesliga. The German series champion had no problems with the Europa League winner and set the course for a smashing victory in the first section. This Bayern greed, the hunger to show everyone – it’s almost scary for the league. And the international press also celebrated the Munich team for their dream debut.

At the heart of the hymns of praise: Jamal Musiala, of course. The FCB jewel is currently sparking euphoria among fans and experts that has not been seen in football in Germany for a long time. His movements, his dribbling, his courage to make unconventional decisions – you haven’t seen a player like this in Munich for a long time. Especially not at 19 years old. Musiala scored two goals against Frankfurt and once again cemented his claim to the starting XI.

FC Bayern Munich: Musiala outstanding, Sané only Joker

One who was celebrated similarly loudly at this age is Leroy Sané. Now, seven years later, he can no longer get beyond his joker role. Musiala is currently outstripping Sané, and given the youngster’s strong performance, coach Julian Nagelsmann is almost forced to set him up. For the 26-year-old, on the other hand, only the bank remains. The Bavarian attacking conundrum becomes even trickier when Kingsley Coman is eligible to play again after being suspended from last season. Then who can go? After his fabulous performance, Musiala should have the least worry about losing his regular place.

And what’s next for Sané? In England it is currently being reported that Manchester United has allegedly made an offer to Bayern. Arsenal should also be interested. The Munich bosses are unlikely to let their former wish transfer go this summer, but: Of course you expect more.

Annoy, switch off, world class: Three Frankfurt scenes show the Sané dilemma at Bayern

The former Schalke player came on after 65 minutes at the start of the season. Three scenes in particular stood out.

Let’s start with the most pleasing from Sané’s point of view: the assist in the 83rd minute. The national player found the gap for Musiala with a wonderful direct ball through the Frankfurt defense legs, who skillfully pushed in to make it 6-1. An outstanding pass that shows once again: Sané has world-class potential. Alone: he calls it up too seldom.

Why is that? Often on the second and third scene.

Shortly before the goal (82nd minute), Sané initiated a promising situation. After a nice dribble, he went deep and would have loved to have the ball passed to Ryan Gravenberch. He would then have appeared alone in the penalty area in front of Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp – a huge opportunity that he missed because of the missed pass. Because newcomer Gravenberch decided to take a shot from 18 meters, which was blocked. Sané then got really angry, spread his arms, broke off his sprint, looked at the sky and no longer paid attention to what was happening behind his back.

The ball rebounded to Noussair Mazraoui, who also tried a long-range shot. The ball went far over it, Sané didn’t even notice it anymore.

Sané ticks off the scene, Musiala stays in the situation

In contrast: Musiala. He was also completely free in the penalty area and could have gotten the ball from Gravenberch. He also spread his arms and waved his hand when the pass didn’t come. The difference: Musiala stayed in the action, didn’t switch off, continued to face the game. A symbolic scene?

Annoy and switch off: Two allegations that Sané undoubtedly has to put up with. The frustration of failed situations can often be seen in his game. He has proven countless times how good he can be. What he learned during his time in Munich was also seen again in Frankfurt: The former Man City star has developed an incredible sprint intensity in the game against the ball and is now chasing opponents over half the pitch.

Sané sprints halfway across the field, wins the ball and then wants to pull a foul

This quality leads us directly to the third scene, in which one can immediately recognize Sané’s light and shadow.

Bayern are in the forward gear in the 66th minute, immediately after Sané’s substitution. The offensive man is around 35 meters in the middle of the opponent’s goal when Musiala loses the ball on the right side and Eintracht switches to a counterattack. Sané recognizes the situation, sprints back and catches Randal Kolo-Muani in his own corner of the penalty area.

Sané has the body between the ball and the opponent, the scene seems clear. But Kolo-Muani tugs at the Bayern star, who immediately slows down, switches off, raises his arms and waits for a free-kick whistle. But that stays out. Kolo-Muani keeps running and recovers the ball. “Leroy stopped playing too early,” emphasized DAZN expert Sandro Wagner in the live comment.

Leroy Sané in the focus of Bayern fans: criticism despite dream passes and dream goals

It is these small scenes that Bayern fans are extremely critical of when it comes to Sané. Of course, they would prefer dream passes like before the 6-1 win against Frankfurt or world-class goals like the 5-3 win against Leipzig. There are enough of these situations at Sané. But also too often the other side, as the 25 minutes from Frankfurt proved once again. There were therefore only top marks for his colleagues – the tz-Individual review. (mind)
