Alexia Putellas is still at the top of world football. Despite the long recovery process that still lies ahead to return to the pitch after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, the Barça midfielder has the good news of appearing on the list of candidates for the UEFA award to the Best Player in the 2021-22 season.

The Spaniard will compete with Arsenal’s English striker Beth Mead and Wolfsburg’s German midfielder Lena Oberdorf for the award she already won in the 2020-21 campaign, in which she was also recognized with the Golden Ball for being a key figure at Barça who won the first Champions League in the history of Spanish women’s football.

The performance with his club, with which he achieved the triplet of national titles -Liga, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa- and stayed on the verge of the second consecutive Champions League, has once again been key to being one of the three best players in the world for UEFA despite being dropped at the last minute in the European Championship.

Their rivals, Mead and Oberdorf, have the endorsement of the great continental selection competition, in which England and Germany were proclaimed champions and runners-up, respectively, with both players in the ideal eleven of the tournament. The forward scored six goals and distributed five assists, in one of her best personal performances in a final phase in living memory.

For her part, the azulgrana, who is also on the list of 20 candidates for the Ballon d’Or, boasts of numbers in the best campaign of her career, with 34 goals in the 42 games played with Barça last year, eleven of them in a Champions that left for the memory the enormous numbers of public in the Camp Nou against Real Madrid and Wolfsburg.
