The Elephants got stronger. American Alex Poythress joined the Ivorian selection as part of the 4th and final window of the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers. He is in the squad that will face Nigeria, Uganda and Cape Verde from August 26 to 28, 2022 in Abidjan, at the Palais des Sports in Treichville.
Poythress received his Ivorian passport
At 2.06m tall, the 28-year-old winger plays in Israel, alongside Maccabi Tel Aviv. Holder of an Ivorian passport, he reinforces the already deprived group of Nisré Zouzoua, Assemian Moularé or even Deon Thompson and Matt Costello, the other naturalized Americans.
While waiting for the effective arrival of Mo Bamba who is of Ivorian origin, the Ivorian selection can count on the talent of Poythress
Born in Savannah, Georgia, Poythress went through the NBA in 2017 with 10.7 points / game then in 2018 with the Indiana Pacers. Last season, he had 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20 minutes in the Euroleague and 12.9 points and 5.3 rebounds in 25 minutes in the VTB League with Zenit Saint Petersburg.
The winger made his debut for the national team in Tunisia, in the preparation matches for this window. While waiting for the effective arrival of Mo Bamba who is of Ivorian origin, the Ivorian selection can count on the talent of Poythress.
The 2023 World Cup will take place jointly in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, from August 25 to September 10, 2023. The Elephants must win the next three matches to advance to the final phase of the competition.
