70-49 | Spain beats Poland and will play the round of 16 against Macedonia

The Men’s U18 came to this third match of the first round after the very tough match against Turkey. Poland put up resistance in the first half, but Dani Miret’s men took the match forward, again from defense. The round of 16 will be on Wednesday against North Macedonia.

This third game of the first phase was not easy. And it is that the physical demand of the first two took its toll. Spain was not so successful in attack, although the defensive sacrifice allows them to have that cushion. The first quarter was very even and with many shooting errors. Sediq Garuba ended up appearing, being important to unblock the attack, although Izan Almansa was once again that life insurance on both sides of the attack.

And after going through the changing rooms, new pieces of this team committed to their goals appeared. David Gómez gave in the minutes he was on the court, as did Martín Iglesias, Alejandro Morneo or Niko Cebrián, all four coming off the bench. In fact, Spain finished with 47 of their 70 points scored by the players who did not appear in the starting five. Poland continued to struggle in attack, with Spain proving to be the best defense in the tournament, averaging fewer than 50 points conceded.

Now Spain will go to the bottom of the table. The round of 16 will be played against North Macedonia, ranked fourth in Group A. And the quarterfinals against the winner of Italy vs Greece. Two victories in those two games would give them a pass to the semifinals and the U19 World Cup next summer. The first of the challenges of this team sacrificed in defense.
