WTA Lausanne: passion still intact for Martina Hingis – rts.ch

Martina Hingis still harbors an undiminished passion for tennis. Five years after her bow, she was able to see in the bays of the Ladies Open that her popularity has not waned on this side of the Sarine.

In Lausanne, the five-time Grand Slam winner rubbed shoulders with Timea Bacsinszky, the tournament ambassador, with whom she had won silver at the Rio Games in 2016. Before this visit to the Olympic capital, Martina Hingis had found in London for the 1st time since 2017 the unique atmosphere of Grand Slam tournaments. At Wimbledon, the mother of 3-year-old Lia won the tournament of legends alongside Kim Clijsters.

“I could have extended my career even further”

It was the first I had played since my retirement. My level of play is still correct. I could have extended my career even further, but the time had come to start a family. I was 37 in 2017. Today, I train regularly in the center where my mother officiates.

At Wimbledon, Martina Hingis had the honor, like Roger Federer, of participating in the 100th anniversary ceremony of the “Center Court”. “It was a great moment. Wimbledon was not my favorite tournament when I played, but I am now convinced that it is the most beautiful of the four.”
