INFO – Niemeier wrestles Tsurenko down

With a work victory in the round of 16: Wimbledon debutant Jule Niemeier mastered the next hurdle in the All England Club after her surprise success on Wednesday. Not everything went according to plan in the 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 3 against the tough Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine, but Niemeier fought his way into the match and after 2:04 hours into the next round. Here is the match report.

INFO – Niemeier makes the second sentence

0: 3 behind, catching up to 3: 3 – and then Niemeier gives the sentence. It’s the game of breaks, both Tsurenko and Niemeier give away too many service games. The 22-year-old is too error-prone today, especially on the first serve. In total, the German has already made nine double mistakes. Tsurenko takes the chance and equalizes to make it 1-1 in sets.

INFO – ups and downs for Niemeier

The beginning of the second set is strongly reminiscent of the initial phase of the match. Significant is the point at 0:40, when Niemeier puts the ball out to the right without pressure from the opponent. A double mistake by the 22-year-old ends the game and seals the next break for Tsurenko – 1-0 in the second set for the Ukrainian.

INFO – How changed: Niemeier cools Tsurenko

What a turning point! Niemeier gets three breaks in a row, leaving Tsurenko no room to breathe. The German became more and more courageous and set the tone at times. Although she also had to give up a service game and fend off another breakball against herself – in the end there was a deserved 6: 4 after the first set.

INFO – Poor start for Niemeier

Niemeier hasn’t really been able to gain a foothold against Tsurenko so far, and she also relinquishes her first two service games directly to the Ukrainian. But the 22-year-old remembers her strengths (possibly also with her coup against Anett Kontaveit in mind) and manages the rebreak to 1: 3 in the meantime. Afterwards she gets through her third service without errors and shortens to 2:3.
