Last year Aslan Karazew (ATP 40) caused a sensation with his successes on the tour. At the tournament in Belgrade, the Russian defeated the then world number one, Novak Djokovic. Reports are now coming to light that weigh heavily on Karatsev.

ZDF reported on Sunday that two players from the top 50 of the ATP are suspected of having fixed games. These are the Russian Aslan Karazew and the Georgian Nikolos Bassilashvili (ATP 25). The Belarusian coach Yahor Yatsik is also said to be involved. ZDF refers to an anonymous source, which is said to be an Eastern European coach.

Noticeably high stakes

The three suspects are said to be involved in five cases. At the ATP tournament in Stuttgart at the beginning of June, Karazew’s double defeat in the first round is said to have had noticeably high bets on a Russian defeat. The amount of the stakes is not known. That was the case with Basilashvili at Wimbledon last year. The stakes are said to have amounted to around half a million francs.

The tennis umbrella organization (ITF) does not want to comment on the incidents. An explosive detail: Karazew’s girlfriend has already been banned from tennis for life.
