Two Czech women advanced to the round of 16 of Wimbledon juniors, Nadal and Kyrgios also succeeded

Linda Klimovičová and Nikola Bartůňková advanced to the round of 16 in the junior tennis Wimbledon.

The last two Czech girls in the junior Wimbledon tennis competition, Nikola Bartůňková and Linda Klimovičová, will play in the round of 16.

On Monday, 16-year-old Bartůňková eliminated Poland’s Weronika Ewaldová in sets 7:5 and 6:1, and in the next round she will face Rose Marie Nijkampová from the Netherlands.

Today, Klimovičová, who is two years older, swept home Isabelle Lacy 6:0, 6:2. In the round of 16, she will challenge the seeded number two, the Swiss Céline Naefová.

In the boys competition, the Czech hopefuls Hynek Bartoň and Jakub Menšík, the finalist of this year’s Australian Open, remain in the game.

Nadal’s streak continues, Kyrgios overcomes shoulder pain

The Spanish Rafael Nadal continues to hold this year’s invincibility at the Grand Slams. At Wimbledon, the 2008 and 2010 champion advanced to the quarter-finals after a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 win over Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp and can now look to a third title on London grass.

The Romanian Simona Halepová will also play for the semi-finals after a clear victory 6:1, 6:2 over the fourth seeded Spaniard Paula Badosa.

The winner of a record 22 Grand Slam tournaments, Nadal won this year’s sixteenth match at the big four tournaments after triumphing at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. As in Paris, he did not lose a set against Van de Zandschulp, although he complicated the situation in the third set and finally converted only the fourth match point. The second-seeded Spaniard advanced to the top eight on his sixteenth consecutive Grand Slam.

“After what happened in the last months and not playing here for three years, I’m happy to be this far in Wimbledon. I can’t complain,” said Nadal, who has long struggled with chronic foot problems. “Botic improved a lot in the third set and from 5-2 it was even,” added Nadal. His next opponent will be the American Taylor Fritz, who did not give a chance to the Australian Jason Kubler.

Kubler’s compatriot Nick Kyrgios defeated the American Brandon Nakashima 4:6, 6:4, 7:6, 3:6, 6:2 and will play in the Grand Slam quarterfinals after seven years. The storm from Canberra knocked out the 56th player in the world despite a sore shoulder, which he had to treat several times. He will play for the first semi-final at the Grand Slam with the Chilean Cristian Garín, who after four and a half hours turned the match against the Australian Alex de Minaur in a win 2:6, 5:7, 7:6, 6:4 and 7:6.

Twenty-seven-year-old Kyrgios played another challenging match after the battle with fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. After losing the first set, he took medication to soothe his sore shoulder and had his hand massaged several times after winning the second set. Thanks to serves, the speed of which often exceeded 200 kilometers per hour, he gained a 2:1 lead.

Nakashima did not give up and equalized thanks to two breaks. In the deciding act, Kyrgios won his opponent’s serve twice and converted the first match point after more than three hours. He helped himself to 35 aces, played a total of 78 winning balls.

Twenty-six-year-old Garín did not win a set in the previous three matches with De Minaur, and today he was already losing 0:2. However, after a successful tie-break, the native of Santiago revived and equalized at 2:2.

In the fifth set, De Minaur had two match points at 5:4 and then threw away the lead in the super tie-break 5:3. Garín won six exchanges in a row and finally won 10:6. Garín is the first Chilean in 13 years to reach the Grand Slam quarterfinals. The last time Fernando González got this far was in 2009 at Roland Garros.

Former world number one Halep swept Badosa, who knocked out Petra Kvitova in the 3rd round, in less than an hour and is hoping to repeat her triumph in London in 2019. Since then, the 30-year-old Romanian has advanced to the top four of the Grand Slams only at the 2020 Australian Open. In the next round she runs into the American Amanda Anisimova.

Jelena Rybakinová became the next advancer today. The 23-year-old tennis player from Kazakhstan has not lost a set so far, she defeated the Croatian Petra Martičová 7:5, 6:3 and will challenge the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarterfinals.
