The Rolex GMT of dreams flies to the NBA

A champion’s Rolex can only match its height and fame, but some can also afford ad hoc “variants”.

Wearing a Rolex in itself places the lucky owner in an elite of privileged ones, but particular characters have special needs and can even afford to request custom variations. This is the case with NBA champion Russell Westbrook.

Who is Russell Westbrook

For those who are not a fan of NBA or basketball in general it is good to say a few words about the character.

Russell Westbrook was born in California, but not with a passion for basketball. His father takes him to the field to teach him how to play, but the boy with a (then) frail physique does not show great interest. So it is not for his greatest friend Khelcey Barrs. Barrs is a natural talent, strong in everything and with a true passion for basketball. During a workout, when Westbrook has already returned home, Barrs collapses to the ground. Friends think about one of his jokes about him, but he doesn’t get up and never will. A cardiac hypertrophy takes him away at only sixteen. From that day on, Russell made his friend’s dream his own: to become a basketball greats. Buy the determination he never had before and become one of the NBA’s highest-rated champions.

A champion’s watch

Westbrook is a spectacularly built guard with enormous elevation. His dunks are always record-breaking and he’s a great scorer. Such a champion needed a timepiece appropriate to his being. The choice fell on the new Rolex model: the GMT-Master II with a black and green bezel. The GMT created for great travelers, allows you to keep under control two time zones. In fact, thanks to the 24-hour hand and the rotating bezel, it allows you to read the local time and that of a different time zone. Thanks to its particular mechanism, the adjustment of the local time is very simple, it is done through the crown, without touching the 24 hour hand.

But the Westbrook GMT has a couple of features that make it unique. The date window and the crown have an inverted position compared to a classic watch. The basketball player’s timepiece is a “right”, ie a left-handed watch. It is not easy to find watches with this particular configuration, let alone Rolex. The only ones that my memory can remember were made on request and by equally exceptional characters. One of these was Charlie Chaplin’s watch. Westbrook’s is the first in a complete series of right-handers made by Rolex. Left-handed people from all over the world, you have no more excuses.
