The 2.03 meter tall power forward came from Lokman Hekim Fethiye Belediyespor (Turkey) to Sachsen’s best basket hunters in 2021. But after just one season they go their separate ways. The American, who weighs 105 kilograms, has already found a new club in Aquila Basket Trento.

Atkins averaged 11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in 32 competitive games with the Niners last year, 56 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from three of 43 attempts.

“We welcome a player who will play an important role in our long spell: Darion is a veteran of Europe, he has played in leagues and cups and often left his mark,” enthuses Emanuele Molin (63), coach of Aktin’s new club Aquila Basket Trento. “We’re signing Atkins because of his technical qualities, his experience and because we think he’s a person who fits in with the group we’re building.”

Aquila Basket Trento finished eighth in the table last season and reached the top 16 in the Eurocup.

With Marko Filipovity (26), the Saxons have already presented the next newcomer. With the 26-year-old, the Neins have secured the services of a Hungarian player for the first time in their club history. The wing, which is 2.04 meters tall and weighs 98 kilograms, comes from the Turkish first division club Afyon Belediyespor and has signed a contract in Chemnitz for the coming season.

“Marko can act variably in both forward positions. In addition, his scoring and rebounding skills make him enormously valuable for us,” says head coach Rodrigo Pastore (49) about the Hungarian international.

“Chemnitz has done an outstanding job in the Bundesliga over the past two years and I’m excited about the game idea for the new season,” explains Filipovity, explaining why he decided to move to Chemnitz. With the Hungarian, there are now eight professionals in the squad. In addition, there will be three other players who will most likely come from the motherland of basketball, the United States of America.

With the start of training at the beginning of August, another exciting season begins for the Chemnitz team. This year, Rodrigo Pastore’s charges will also have to adapt to European teams. In the first round of Champions League qualifiers on September 21, Niners will face North Macedonia’s TFT Skopje.

The national kick-off for the Niners is at the MagentaSport BBL Cup. There the Saxons meet on 15./16. October on cup runner-up HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim.
