Clayton Kershaw became the first pitcher to pitch at least 7 perfect innings twice in the same season. in nearly half a century in the Major Leagues, before his pitching gem was broken in the eighth inning, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the neighboring Angels 9-1 Friday night in Anaheim.
After Kershaw retired the Angels’ first 21 batters in order, Luis Rengifo hit the legendary left-hander’s 75th pitch for a double to the left-field corner.
Despite being in the away stadium, Kershaw received a standing ovation from thousands upon thousands of Dodgers fans.. And there was another when he left the game.
Kershaw, who pitched 7 perfect innings in Minneapolis against the Twins on April 13 before being relieved by his manager, completed the eighth inning against the Angels for a final 8 innings, 1 hit, 6 strikeouts and 0 walks.
Kershaw’s next start will be in the All-Star Game at home
After improving his season record to 7-2 and an impressive 2.13 ERA, Kershaw will make his next appearance Tuesday at none other than the MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.. By the way, the stadium’s food and beverage workers agreed this Friday not to go on strike.
The veteran Kershaw is one of the candidates to be designated the starting pitcher by the National League, but his teammate Tony Gonsolin could prevent him from doing so after a truly spectacular first half of the season (11-0, 2.02).
Kershaw, the franchise’s all-time strikeout leader, got support from his defense, especially third baseman Justin Turner, who made an incredible play that prevented Michael Stefanic’s fourth-inning hit.
Offensively, the Dodgers (59-30) were led by Will Smith, who hit 4-for-4, and Justin Turner, who drove in 3 runs.
