The Aben Humeya de Purchena Morisco Games return after four years of absence

The Provincial Council of Almeria and the Municipality of Purchena have reunited for a new edition of the Moorish Games of Aben Humeya which are celebrated from July 29 to 30 in the municipality. The event, declared traditional tourist interestreturns after four years of absence thanks to the institutional union, volunteering and the sponsorship of local companies (Omya and Gestagua).

The Patio del Mandarino has been the setting chosen to break down this year’s program by the Deputy for Culture and Cinema, Manuel Guzmanas well as the mayor, Juan Miguel Tortosathe culture technician, Manolo Aloneand the person in charge of Sports, Anthony Larawho has explained the exhibition of two modalities that he has made Juan Manuel Agudo: Lifting of Burxana Stone and Support of Brick.

The deputy for Culture and Cinema has highlighted that “it is a cause for celebration to be able to present one of the most important activities in the province that combine history, sport, culture and tourism and that makes the municipality of Purchena a benchmark in the province”.

In the same way, Guzmán has invited the people of Almería to enjoy cultural and sports activities, as well as recreations to highlight something that happened more than 450 years ago, the Moorish Rebellion, and that Purchena has known how to squeeze like nobody else. Purchena City Council is characterized by its eagerness for cultural activities, as a town with dimensions that is committed to culture, traditions and sports”.

For his part, the mayor expressly thanked the Diputación de Almería and the sponsors (Omya and Gestagua) for their support: “Without their contributions it would be very difficult to celebrate the Moorish Games.” Also, he has highlighted the “illusion and fervor” of the people for the return of these festivities that are an example thanks to the high level of volunteering and participation of the neighbors.

Tortosa has pointed out that “the Morisco Games are an example of local development, highlighting a part of history and turning it into a whole tourist product”.

For his part, Manuel Sola stressed that it is a historical, cultural and sporting event that starts from an event that occurred more than 450 years ago thanks to the institutions and thanks to volunteering “which represents almost 20% of the population”.

Sola has recalled that “the program takes us, in each of its days, to a town of five centuries ago, on the one hand through a historical staging and through sporting events of Olympic origin and others recovered and documented the oldest in Spain, as well as cultural activities that can rarely be enjoyed in our towns”.

Sola has ensured that each of the days are special and has invited the people of Almeria to immerse themselves in history and visit the souks of crafts and gastronomy and the spectacular tests that reveal the past and history of Purchena.

Antonio Lara has been in charge of unraveling two of the most spectacular tests that exist within the programming and of which Juan Manuel Agudo has made an exhibition: The lifting of the Burxana Stoneweighing close to 70 kilos, and the support of bricks of White Marble of the region.

Among the sporting events and exhibitions, the Race Ribbons on Horseback to the Moorishthe shot put test ‘Trofeo José Luis Martínez’, in homage to the Bastetan thrower; archery, song release y shot with honda, Moorish wrestlingBrick support and Burxana stone lifting, the Urban Thick Half League, Triple Jump and Speedamong other.
