Tennis coach Max Wenders suspended for 12 years for match fixing

LONDON — Dutch tennis coach Max Wenders has been banned from the sport for 12 years for match-fixing, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (IITA) announced on Wednesday.

IALI said Wenders admitted “several charges of match-fixing” and also confessed to destroying evidence and failing to report a corrupt approach.

One of the charges against Wenders came under a rule that prohibits people involved in tennis from “directly or indirectly assisting a player to fail to perform at their best in an event.”

IALI did not say when or where the alleged conduct occurred, and the agency did not name any players.

IALI said Wenders was suspended and fined $12,000 at a hearing in April 2021, but the penalties have not been released until now following comments from the Wenders legal team.

He will not be allowed to participate in any tennis tournament authorized by the main governing bodies of the sport until 2033.

Wenders has reportedly worked with several players on the WTA Tour as a coach, assistant or training partner.
