It is “Munich’s newest and largest sports center”, said Mayor Verena Dietl happily at the inauguration ceremony for the Freiham sports park. Although the school children and members from over 20 clubs have been training on the facility for two years, the official opening had been postponed until now due to Corona.

“We made it,” said a delighted Detlev Langer, Head of Building Construction in the Building Department. The system was handed over on time. 80,000 square meters of area had been processed. “We installed 405,000 bricks”. During a tour, the guests were able to see the sports facilities that had been built for 100 million euros. Outside there are soccer fields and grass pitches, a beach volleyball and athletics facility, but also the 800 square meter skate park. It is located after the pedestrian underpass from the education campus right at the beginning of the sports park.

The buildings have multifunctional halls, some with stands for competitions, but also small gyms for judo, dancing or other things, as well as the clubhouse. At the inauguration, a caterer distributed food and drinks. Another tenant is to move in for the restaurant and entertain the athletes.

In a gym, Jürgen Trifthäuser (school sports department) demonstrated how versatile the rooms can be used thanks to special devices. A ballet barre quickly becomes a rung for the wall bars and a wide variety of sports equipment can be hung in the carabiners, hooks and eyes. This is ideal, especially for all-day lessons, in which the children should get a lot of exercise.

Sports consultant Florian Kraus explained the inclusion offers of the sports park. This ranges from the inscriptions in Braille, to the tactile guidance system, the induction loops in the stands for better hearing, to the possibility of playing wheelchair hockey and blind football. “Sportpark Freiham is Bavaria’s flagship project for contemporary, forward-looking and inclusive sports facility construction,” said Langer. He is particularly proud of the school swimming pool. The 25 meter long pool is suitable for competitions and the lifting floor can be adjusted to different depths so that non-swimmers or wheelchair users can practice safely. “Sportpark Freiham is Bavaria’s flagship project for contemporary, forward-looking and inclusive sports facility construction,” said Langer.

In the last days of school, the Freiham children have the opportunity to get to know the sports park anew. As part of the “Schloss-Spurt Schulsport” campaign, they can get a taste of over 20 sports such as boxing, frisbee, skating or boogie-woogie, Kraus explained.
