While the third practice was run on a wet track, qualifying was dry. Black clouds were hovering over the Hungaroring, but the rain did not come during qualifying.
Cunoda, Albon, Vettel, Gasly and Latifi did not advance from the first part. The Williams driver and winner of the third practice even had the fastest sector, but he made a mistake in the last corner and finished last. Gasly’s time was deleted again due to track limits.
In the second part, qualifying ended for Pérez, Chou, Magnussen, Stroll and Schumacher. They also deleted Pérez’s time, but then returned it to him. In addition, the Mexican also complained about Magnussen, who hindered him in the fast lap.
In the third part, Sainz took first place. Russell was second. Verstappen’s first attempt failed, he braked and was seventh.
In the second attempts came drama. Verstappen complained about the loss of power. George Russell took first place, beating both Ferrari drivers. Verstappen gradually fell to 10th place. Hamilton was up to 7th.
George Russell took his first pole position. So far, his best start was second (twice).
