The association Guillaume de Rubrouck revives the tradition of festivities organized in Mongolia and known under the name of Naadam. At the local level, the latest date back to 2019 for the 25th anniversary of the twinning between the Flemish village and the Mongolian province of Bulgan. On Sunday, it will be proposed to relive a little of Brother Guillaume’s journey in the empire of Genghis Khan. The great conquering warrior will be discussed in particular through ” a yurt that bears his name and objects that we don’t often have the opportunity to see », announces Chantal Gobillot, president of the organizing association, in partnership with the Friends of Guillaume and the support of the municipality.

typical games

Demonstrations of Mongolian wrestling, horizontal archery and shagaï competition, a game of knucklebones very popular in Mongolia, are on the program of this event which will be held on the leisure area of the Bourbourg road, a few hundred meters from the center of the village. Mongolian tales will be told in a traditional yurt, starting at 3 p.m. A Mongolian music concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. You can also taste airag, a fermented mare’s milk, considered in Mongolia as a symbol of purity, kindness and altruism. It is a refreshing drink consumed in large quantities by the Mongols during Naadam. No horse racing this year, but wanderings of wolves. The presence of this small pack, coming from Eastern countries, is interesting because in nature the wolf is a difficult animal to observe or approach. He is very cautious, which reinforces his mysterious side (see our box below).

The presence of a Highland beef, Flemish games and snacks complete the program for this day of friendship and relaxation. Nestled at the foot of the church, the Maison Guillaume de Rubrouck takes its visitors to the heart of Genghis Khan’s empire and the culture of Central Asia. Exceptionally, the museum will welcome the public free of charge this Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., then from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
