After Victor Wembanyama’s package, some may have hoped that Joel Embiid would join the French team for EuroBasket 2022 (September 1-18). But unsurprisingly, the Sixers player won’t be there.
“His request for naturalization has been accepted”explains the former captain of the Blues, now GM of the selection, to the team. “We know that he is still waiting for a French passport. When he has obtained it, he can start the process and apply for a FIBA license for the national team. He would have liked to play this summer if he had not been injured. But he underwent hand surgery and did not return to basketball. For him as for Victor Wembanyama, it would be too fair (for the Euro)”.
After finishing the playoffs with a damaged right thumb ligament, which indeed forced him to have surgery, but also a broken face and a concussion, Joel Embiid clearly needs to rest this summer and play. the Euro with the Blues, following his naturalization, was never an option considered.
For the leader of the Sixers, the objective seems from the start to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
