Karel Geraerts has taken his first victory at the highest level. The new Union coach was allowed to cheer after a goal from Ross Sykes, afterwards the people from Brussels missed the opportunities to walk further. Due to the defeat, Charleroi misses the chance to lead the standings alone.

Union – Charleroi in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: Just before the hour, Union finally gets what it deserves, namely a goal. It is newcomer Ross Sykes who breaks the spell for the home team with a nice infiltration.
  • Man of the match: Simon Adingra showed some nice things on the ball. You can see that the Brighton mercenary has a lot of technical baggage. Deemster made some way in the second half and was also replaced.
  • Remarkable: After last year’s 0-3 and 4-0 win, Union now beats Charleroi for the 3rd time in a row. This is the first time in the history of Belgian football. Union also kept a zero on the scoreboard in those 3 games.

Union takes control of the game

Union faces an extremely difficult task: to confirm after last year’s dream season. Karel Geraerts already makes his debut with a 4 out of 6.

The new-fangled coach saw his team get off to a good start. Only those really great opportunities to play football together, that didn’t happen. The biggest chance in the first half was still for Kayembe, Moris saved.

2-0 explodes on the crossbar

Even after the coffee, Union took the reins very tightly. Ilaimaharitra first tested Moris’ fists, then it was a prize for the home team. Sykes came up with a good infiltration and finished it off nicely.

Charleroi was powerless to really get Union into trouble. It was even close to 2-0. Teuma placed a wonderful free kick under the bar. However, Koffi had read it and made a fine save.

Union has that first three-pointer of the season.

Sykes: “I also do this in training”

Ross Sykes (Union): “This is a great home debut. I’m happy for the fans who showed up tonight. A great atmosphere. It’s nice to score for the team. The coach says if there is room, you should go forward with the ball. I saw the space and I just went. It was a great goal. I always do that in training.”

Anass Zaroury (Charleroi): “We missed grinta tonight, especially in the first half. We knew that Union is a good football team and that we had to be concentrated on the counters. There was a lack of concentration.”

Edward Still (Charleroi): “We were convinced that we could do something here tonight. Unfortunately, we leave here with nothing in our hands. We were good in the duels, but had problems with the second ball. We just didn’t play enough chances together. We didn’t have enough possession in the first half, but it was better in the second half.”

Karel Geraerts (Union): “I can’t hide the fact that this victory is important for every player and coach. I am satisfied with the performance of this group. The players have shown today that they are still a good team. There will be a lot of talk about the players who have left. But 80% of the players who have dominated the Belgian championship at times are still on the field and on the bench.”
