My club introduces itself: UJC Dornbirn represents the state in the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time in twelve years

It is no coincidence that the Union Judoclub Dornbirn represents Vorarlberg on a national level for the first time in twelve years, because the association does a very good job.

150 young people and children, 50 adults “home” to the UJC Dornbirn. The club has grown steadily since it was founded (1965) and, after a twelve-year absence, has made it back into the second division of the Bundesliga. “We are working hard and intensively so that we can establish ourselves in the league,” says chairman Reinhold Böhler, who estimates the number of active judokas in the state at 500.

The figureheads at the UJC?

Khangerel Batkhuyak, Sandro Hölzler and David Böhler, for women it is Johanna Nöckl. They stand on the mat three times a week, and the best are also trained in the performance center. Young people and children are recruited for introductory courses – word has gotten around that judo is a “cool” sport and that the UJC does exemplary work with young people. “Our goal is to get as many people as possible interested in judo, because judo is also a life lesson. Values such as respect, self-confidence, politeness and recognition are particularly important,” says Böhler, who has held positions since 1999 and took over the management role in Dornbirn from long-term chairman Peter Fischlmayr in 2014.

“We have a great sense of togetherness, without motivated athletes and officials none of this would be possible.”

The annual highlight is the trade fair city tournament – with 300 judokas from six nations. The UJC is dominant in the student cup, and there have also been countless state championship titles and top ranks in national championships and tournaments abroad.
