Mountcastle breaks tie in favor of Orioles, victorious 5-1

BALTIMORE — Ryan Mountcastle broke the tie with a two-run single in the fifth on Monday, guiding the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mountcastle struck to safety against Corey Kluber (6-6), pushing Ryan McKenna and Cedric Mullins home.

Baltimore then took a 3-1 lead. In the same inning, the Orioles added a run with an option from Anthony Santander, and another run with a sacrifice fly from Austin Hays.

Kluber allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings.

Reliever Nick Vespi (3-0) had five strikeouts, including four at bat.

Brandon Lowe homered for the Rays, who have lost their last three games.

Randy Arozarena stole a 20th baseman, who is fourth in major league baseball in this chapter.

Earlier Monday, the team announced that the season is over for Kevin Kiermaier and Mike Zunino.

Kiermaier is going to have hip surgery in a few weeks.

The 32-year-old outfielder hasn’t played since July 9.

A three-time Gold Glove winner, Kiermaier has batted .228 this year, with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.

31-year-old receiver Zunino has been out since June 9 with left shoulder problems.

He was an all-star player last year, setting a career-high 33 homers.

He batted .148 this season, with five homers and 16 RBIs.

The Rays lost twice to Kansas City over the weekend.

The Orioles reduced their record to .500, having won 11 times in 13 games before the All-Star break.
