Marianne Vos sprints faster than Lotte Kopecky in 5th Giro stage | giro

The 114-kilometre 5th stage was mostly completed on a local circuit, but the climb to Bergamo’s Citta Alta was the end of the line. The game developed attractively with several attacking attempts, but as expected the decision fell on the final slope.

Elisa Longo Borghini, Marianne Vos and Mavi Garcia came over the top with a small lead, but in the descent, Tour of Flanders winner Lotte Kopecky rejoined, as did Annemiek van Vleuten, who was held up at the foot of the slope by a fall for her.

In the sprint of the leading group, Vos won with a clear difference in front of Kopecky and the Italian Silvia Persico. It is already the 32nd stage victory for Vos in the Giro Donne, and the second in this edition.

The main contenders for overall win were all in the elite group, so nothing changes at the top of the standings.

An important day awaits the classification riders on Thursday, because then the Giro Donne will tackle the high mountains for the first time this year. The finish of the 6th stage is drawn more than 1,700 meters above sea level, on the Passo Maniva. The Giro ends in Padua on Sunday.
