Maccabiah of superlatives | Jewish General

For the German Maccabees it was an event of superlatives: With 230 athletes, they not only sent the largest delegation in their history, they also matched their medal record from 2017. The Germans won ten gold, 17 silver and 24 bronze medals at the Maccabiah, the »Jewish Olympiad«.

“Both the quantity and the quality were right,” said Alon Meyer, President of Makkabi Germany, pleased with the result of his delegation. For him it was the fifth Maccabiah. Routine has not set in for him, however. “It’s always something incredible to meet so many Jewish athletes, so many like-minded people,” Meyer told the Jewish General.

medal guarantee As in previous competitions, the table tennis section again proved to be a medal guarantor for the German delegation. Katharina Michajlova won one gold and three silver medals and did not go empty handed in any of the four table tennis disciplines.

“I’m satisfied with my performance, but of course I would have preferred four gold medals,” said the 33-year-old in an interview with this newspaper. In Israel she felt “very comfortable and in good hands”. It was a special experience for her to “be part of such a great and big event”.

From July 12 to 26, more than 10,000 Jewish athletes from around 60 countries competed against each other at the Maccabiah – the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and the Paralympics. The focus of the event, which is held every four years in Israel, is not so much the competition. Rather, it is a celebration of Jewish identity and the connection of all Jews to Israel. This was evident again this year in the extensive supporting programme.

highlight The first highlight of the Maccabiah was the opening ceremony, where all delegations ceremonially entered the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. In the following two weeks, the athletes were able to go on numerous trips, for example to the Dead Sea or to the Jordan. The German delegation visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and prayed together at the Kotel.

The day after the closing ceremony last Monday, the 21st Maccabiah finally ended. Alon Meyer is already looking at the next games: “Preparations actually start tomorrow.”
