Little budding scientists study the aquatic environment

Since February, primary school pupils from the Chestnut School from CP to CM2 have taken part in a module of seven sessions with the Epage du Bassin Viaur. The students studied with the CPIE (Permanent Center for Environmental Initiatives of Rouergue) the watershed of the Viaur, as well as the water cycle and the uses of water in our territory. They also exchanged around the plants and animals of our rivers and discussed the notion of ecosystem.

With a speaker from the League for the Protection of Aveyron Birds, the pupils got to know the birds of Viaur.

During this outing, a facilitator from the fishing federation introduced them to the Viaur fish. The two classes went to the banks of the river upstream from Pont-de-Grandfuel to make observations and take samples on the quality of the river. Then, they made improvements by planting trees and taking cuttings.

Another afternoon was devoted to an introduction to fishing on the Terral lake (municipality of Flavin). The apprentice fishermen caught a number of roaches.

The project ended on Friday July 1 with the Viaur festival in Pont-de-Salars where the pupils took up all the concepts covered and carried out fun activities (climbing, archery, zip line, bowling, mini – mountain bike trails, wooden games, etc.). On Monday, May 30, the students of the school took part in a departmental gathering around the Occitan language in Salmiech. The classes carried out educational workshops and attended a play “Quesaquò e Mascomprès”. The day ended with a visit to the rural cart museum.
