Josh Winckowski’s Wrigley Field commentary awakens insufferable ballpark nerds – cosmo-polis.ch

Josh Winckowski was outstanding for the Boston Red Sox against the Chicago Cubs last night, giving up a single earned run over six innings of work. Unfortunately, his offense was a no-show and resulted in a loss. Wrigley Field rocked, although the home team is miles out of contention this year and will be buzzing with life this afternoon as the Cubs attempt to complete a sweep.

After the game, Winckowksi was asked about the friendly confines and gave a stunned answer.

Josh Winckowski über Wrigley Field:

“A bit disappointing. Fenway has a presence. I honestly didn’t get that here. I said to my mum last night this place is very standard.”

This, of course, was a bat-signal for weird Wrigley Field enthusiasts, who logged on en masse on a Saturday night to argue online about which venerable ballpark is better — the one on the North Side or the one Ben Affleck and the boys robbed.

For the record, they’re both great! I’d give Fenway a slight advantage for #1, but it’s not like being the second best venue in all of baseball is an insult. Though, the more capitalism dictates, Wrigleyville’s classic corner looks like an outdoor mall, and the more ads pepper the ivy, the less charm it reveals.

Perhaps Winckowski’s assessment bothers Cubs fans because, deep down, they know that much of what was special about Wrigley Field is slowly being erased. Or maybe it bothers them because they have nothing better to do. One thing the rest of us can agree with is that there’s nothing more lame than fanbases bickering over who has the better stadium. Just down to earth content for the doggie days of summer.
