Josephine Wu – Team Canada

Biography

Josephine Wu first represented Canada at the Junior Pan Am Championships in 2008. Her junior career was highlighted by a bronze medal at the 2012 Junior Pan Am Championships. She earned a spot on the Senior National Team in 2016, returning to the game after a torn Achilles tendon suffered in December 2014, which forced him to go through the operating table. Only four months after her operation, she competed at the 2015 Canadian Championships.

While attending the University of Alberta, Wu competed at the 2017 University Games, reaching the round of 32 in women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Wu made her first BWF World Championships appearance in 2018, in women’s doubles with Michelle Tong. Later that same year, she formed a mixed doubles partnership with Joshua Hurlburt-Yu. In 2019, they won gold at the Canadian Championships, Pan Am Championships and Pan Am Games. In 2021, they successfully defended their Pan Am Championships title. They took part in their first Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Beginnings: Has been playing badminton since the age of seven… After a first lesson at badminton camp, she told her father that she wanted to continue practicing this sport… Other interests: Plays tennis, squash and volleyball during competitive season to keep fit… Enjoys mountain hiking during off season… Studying to become an occupational therapist… Everything and nothing : Collects magnets and pins from the trips she takes… Considers Rafael Nadal her sporting role model because of his passion on the court and his respect for his opponents on and off the court… Her favorite saying “No matter how great your dedication, you never win anything alone”…
