31 July 2022 – Valentijn Driessen thinks that Ajax should be concerned now that Devyne Rensch is not functioning well as a right back. The nineteen-year-old defender was, according to the football chief of The Telegraph Saturday evening the dissonance on the Amsterdam side in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale against PSV (3-5).
Where Ajax strengthened itself in several positions this summer, no replacement for Noussair Mazraoui who left for Bayern Munich was recruited. Rensch gets the chance from trainer Alfred Schreuder as right back. “Ajax should certainly be concerned,” says Driessen in a video item from the newspaper. “Rensch does not seem to function as a right back. He functioned well there a year and a half ago, but has since completely lost it. He is just not a real right back. In youth he played centrally. You can see that he is both defensive and attacking. has difficulty with the right back position. Gakpo was too quick for him every time and was able to give the cross. It also does not work in the combination with Antony.”
Ajax lost the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale 3-5. According to Driessen, PSV was the deserved winner. “PSV had the match under control for the longest time. In the initial phase around Ajax’s 1-0. Then Ajax played very well, with varied and fast attacking play and the pressure on it. PSV had both at the end of the first half and almost the entire second half in my hands. I didn’t really have the idea, not even with the 2-2, that Ajax would walk over PSV.”
According to Driessen, the fact that PSV has won the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale is good news from a Dutch perspective. “Fortunately, PSV will play the double match against AS Monaco with a good feeling, that is the most important thing. If PSV lose here with 5-3, you go to France in a minor mood and you just have to wait and see if PSV can qualify. Great show here and fueled confidence for the double against AS Monaco.”
